Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away at the age of 92 due to age-related health issues on Thursday night. His declining health had been a concern for several months before his death. Singh is widely recognised as the ‘architect of India’s economic reforms’ and served as Prime Minister for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014.
In a heartfelt tribute, Emmy Award-winning comedian Vir Das shared his unique perspective on MSingh, highlighting the former Prime Minister’s remarkable ability to appreciate humor. Das reflected on his experiences making jokes about Singh during prime-time news broadcasts. He stated, “Dr. Manmohan Singh said that history would remember him kindly. I’m happy to see that’s the case on social media today. He had a sense of humour.”
Das reminisced about the time he and his work team made jokes about Singh while knowing that his office was watching. “He was the most powerful man in the country and we were doing jokes about him five nights a week on a mainstream news channel, that weren’t even that great because we were utterly immature. Mind you this wasn’t even on a comedy show but as a part of a 9pm news bulletin that every businessperson in the country watched. Think about how far fetched that seems today. The mark of a truly great, secure, and humble leader, to my profession, is the ability to take a joke.”
He continuded by saying, “Great leaders understand that’s part of the job, that powerful politicians and jest have always been historically intertwined, and that taking humour within grace makes them so much greater. In that respect, he stood tall above any Indian leader in my lifespan. Rest in peace sir”
Das in another Instagram post further elaborated on Singh’s legacy by encouraging people to look up his impressive resume. He stated, “Do yourself a favour today and google Dr Manmohan Singh’s resume. Read just the education section, then the whole thing. Awe inspiring stuff.”
Apart from Vir, many other B’town celebs mourned Singh’s demise as they offered their condolences on social media. Sunny Deol wrote, “I’m deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh, a visionary leader who played a pivotal role in shaping India’s economic liberalization. His wisdom, integrity & contributions to the nation’s growth will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences. #RIPDrManmohanSingh.”
Sanjay Dutt expressd sadness and said, “Deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. His contributions to India will never be forgotten 🙏🏼.” Riteish Deshmukh, Nimrat Kaur, Kapil Sharma and many other celebs also offered their respect towards him.
