'This is the last time he will bat at 7': Ravi Shastri pushes for Nitish Reddy’s batting order promotion

Former Indian cricketer and coach Ravi Shastri believes Nitish Kumar Reddy deserves a promotion in the batting order. This follows Reddy’s impressive maiden Test century against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.
Reddy’s unbeaten 105 runs off 176 balls, including ten fours and a six, highlighted his composure and skill. He is currently India’s top scorer in the series, with 284 runs at an average of 71.
Speaking on Star Sports, Shastri suggested that Reddy’s performance warrants a higher batting position. He believes this change will enhance the team’s balance and allow for the inclusion of five bowlers.
“I feel that the way he’s batted, this is the last time he will bat at 7. To get the balance of the side, you need him to go higher up the order, either 5 or 6, and then you have the opportunity of playing five bowlers to take the 20 wickets. He’s given that kind of confidence to the selectors, the team management, and the captain,” Shastri said on Star Sports.
Shastri explained how moving Reddy up the order could strategically benefit India. He emphasised the advantage of having five bowlers, especially in the upcoming Sydney Test.
“Reddy is fully capable of batting in the top six. Then it changes the whole balance of the game. You go to Sydney with him batting in the top six, and you’re playing five bowlers,” he added.
Reddy’s consistent performances have been a bright spot for India in a challenging series. His century and steady contributions across six innings establish him as a dependable all-rounder.
Reddy’s innings at the MCG not only saved India from the follow-on but also showcased his adaptability. He has proven his ability to handle diverse conditions and bowling attacks.
This adaptability has earned him the confidence of the team management and selectors. Reddy is now seen as a crucial player for India’s future.
The series is currently tied at 1-1. India needs to win the remaining two Tests to secure a place in the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final.
Shastri believes that incorporating five specialist bowlers could be decisive for India. Promoting Reddy in the batting order would enable this change while maintaining batting depth.
