Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, has been residing in a secure location in Lutyens’ Delhi for over two months after she fled Bangladesh due to significant anti-government protests that were occurring in her country. The Government of India has arranged a safe house for her in this high-security area, which is home to several former and current Members of Parliament and senior officials.
Sheikh Hasina reached India on August 5. She landed at Hindon airbase, where she met Ajit Doval, who is the National Security Adviser of India. she was moved to her current residence within days due to inadequate arrangements at the airbase.
Sheikh Hasina is under continuous security protection, there are security personnel assigned to guard her at all times. She is able to maintain a semblance of normalcy, including occasional walks at the nearby Lodhi Garden. The Indian government has chosen not to publicly disclose Hasina’s specific location to the Bangladeshi authorities. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed that Hasina sought permission to enter India.
Sheikh Hasina was accompanied on her flight to India by two close family members her sister, Sheikh Rehana and her daughter Saima Wazed, who works with the World Health Organization in Delhi. Recent developments have seen the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), established by Hasina in 2010, issue arrest warrants against her and several others for alleged crimes against humanity related to the protests leading to her ousting The tribunal has ordered that Hasina and the other accused individuals be presented in court by November 18.
